Controlled installation of Hytrel® axle boots and stainless steel clamps
What are Hytrel® axle boots and stainless steel clamps?
Axle boots protect the drive shaft joint from dirt and moisture and keep the lubricant inside the joint. Modern axle boots can consist of, amongst other materials, Hytrel® – a thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPC-ET) – or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
Stainless steel straps or ear clamps are often used to secure the boot. These are fastened using a suitable chuck.
Why is the correct tightening torque important?
When tightening the stainless steel clamp, the tightening torque specified by the vehicle, boot or clamp manufacturer must be adhered to:
- Insufficient strap tension can result in an inadequate seal.
- Excessive strap tension can damage the axle boot or shorten its service life.
There is no universal tightening torque. The manufacturer’s specifications for the specific application are always decisive.
How are the stainless steel clamps fitted?
The HAZET clamp pliers for axle boots 1847, 1847-90, 1847-22 and 1847/3, as well as the HAZET clamping jaws 1847-090/2, are designed for the installation. Straight and angled clamping jaws allow for installation even in confined spaces.
Tightening is carried out together with a suitable torque wrench, such as the HAZET 5110-3CT with a measuring range of 10 to 60 Nm. Before the installation, the tightening torque specified for the respective application must be checked.
