What do I need oil filter wrenches for?
An oil filter wrench is a special tool that is used to change the oil filter in cars. Oil filters can get stuck in hard-to-reach places in the engine compartment, making them difficult to access. This is where the oil filter wrench comes into its own. This fits precisely around the oil filter. This creates both additional grip and leverage. This allows the oil filter to be loosened or tightened almost effortlessly.
What do the different drive profiles of oil filter wrenches mean?
Oil filter wrenches are available in various sizes and drive profiles. The profiles refer to the part of the wrench that comes into contact with the oil filter in order to grip and turn it. A distinction is made between hexagonal profiles, polygonal profiles, groove profiles and groove profiles with special grooves. The different profiles refer to the shape of the drive profiles. Depending on the vehicle, certain oil filter wrenches are more suitable than others. Choosing the right oil filter wrench is therefore essential for carrying out work on the vehicle efficiently.
How do I find the suitable oil filter wrench?
To identify the correct oil filter, the following steps must first be carried out:
1. The first step is to determine the profile type. This involves examining the mounting configuration of the oil filter housing:
A general distinction is made between edge profiles and groove profiles. The former may have six or more surfaces.
In the case of grooved housing designs, a distinction is made between inward-curving and outward-curving profiles. This is designated as a special grooved profile.
2. In the second step, the number of features on the oil filter housing is determined. All features must be counted (note the starting point). For the edge profile, the surfaces (edges) are counted. For the groove profile, the number is determined by the number of indentations. The special groove profile features protrusions, which are counted.
3. The final step is to measure the outer diameter of the oil filter housing. A vernier calliper, which can be used to measure small distances and lengths precisely, is suitable for this purpose. For an edge profile with symmetrical graduation, the measurement is taken from edge to edge. For asymmetrical graduation, the measurement is taken from groove to edge.
For a groove profile with symmetrical graduation, the measurement is taken from one groove to the next.
Which oil filter wrench is suitable for my car?
Different vehicles require different oil filters. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, specific oil filter wrenches are used. The shape and size of the filters may vary. Furthermore, in some cars, access to the oil filter is difficult. In such cases, slimmer and more flexible oil filter wrenches are required.
Filter housings are available in metal or plastic: metal housings require more robust wrenches.
Care must be taken with plastic housings: vehicle manufacturers specify a particular torque that must be adhered to when tightening the filter or housing. These specifications are designed to ensure that the filter or housing is neither too loose nor too tight.
What exactly does ‘torque-controlled tightening’ mean?
The oil filters and housings are commissioned in accordance with the manufacturer’s precise specifications – much like commissioning a car’s wheel screw connection to a specific torque. The recommended torque ensures that the seal between the filter and the engine is compressed with accurate compression, without excessive pressure that could cause damage.
