Tightening torque ... Torque when actuating a screw connection

The torque(the force) that is applied when a screw is actuated.

Torque is a physical quantity and is also referred to as rotational force.
A common unit of torque is the Newton metre (Nm for short).
One Newton metre represents the rotational force required to turn an object with a lever arm around a certain point.

We distinguish between the

  • Tightening (turning) torque: in order not to overload the screw with excessive force, the precise "tightening" of a screw should be carried out with a torque spanner if possible.
The tightening torque indicates the optimum range (Nm or lbf.ft) in which the torque spanner should be used.
  • Loosening torque: an impact wrench can help to loosen a tight screw. The loosening torque indicates how much "power" the tool has.
  • But be careful! Whether loosening or tightening - the saying "after tight comes loose" should be taken seriously. A torn screw creates additional work.
If it does happen, HAZET has suitable tools in its programme

Applies to HAZET impact wrenches:

Maximum tightening (torque) torque

(tightening the screw connection - clockwise)

  • Experience shows that the tightening (torque) torque only increases in terms of its duration up to a certain torque. For example, the torque curve increases up to a release time of X seconds and then flattens out sharply.
The maximum tightening torque is determined in a period in which the torque at the highest point of the steep rise corresponds to this curve.
Continuous work in this range places maximum load on the item and has an effect on the service life of the item. The time required to reach the torque is sensibly limited to prevent extreme wear.
In our laboratory tests, the maximum time is 30 seconds.

Recommended tightening (turning) torque

(Tightening the screw connection - clockwise)

  • The recommended tightening (turning) torque is the value that is reached after a limited release time. This value offers a good compromise between performance and service life. The item is not subjected to maximum load here. If this value/actuation time is adhered to, wear is optimised. This time is approx. 5 to 10 seconds

Maximum loosening torque

(loosening the screw connection - anti-clockwise)
The maximum loosening torque is similar to the maximum tightening torque, but in the direction of loosening. In this case, the measuring screw is tightened in advance in a controlled manner using a torque spanner. The maximum loosening torque is then the value that the impact wrench can loosen within a maximum of 30 seconds under laboratory conditions.
