What do I need oil filter wrenches for?

An oil filter wrench is a special tool that is used to change the oil filter in cars. Oil filters can get stuck in hard-to-reach places in the engine compartment, making them difficult to access. This is where the oil filter wrench comes into its own. This fits precisely around the oil filter. This creates both additional grip and leverage. This allows the oil filter to be loosened or tightened almost effortlessly.

What do the different drive profiles of the oil filter wrenches mean?

Oil filter wrenches are available in different sizes and drive profiles. The profiles refer to the part of the spanner that comes into contact with the oil filter in order to grip and turn it. A distinction is made between hexagonal profile, edge profile, groove profile and special groove profile. The different profiles refer to the shape of the drive profiles. Depending on the vehicle, certain oil filter wrenches are more suitable than others. The right choice of oil filter wrench is therefore essential in order to be able to work efficiently on the vehicle.

How do I find the suitable oil filter wrench?

To determine the correct oil filter, the following steps must first be carried out:

1. The first step is to determine the profile type. This involves looking at the drive shape of the oil filter housing. A distinction is generally made between edge profile and groove profile. The former can have 6 edges or more than 6 edges. In the case of the housing shape with grooves, a distinction is made between inwardly moulded curves and outwardly moulded curves. The latter is referred to as a special grooved profile.

2. In the second step, the number of characteristics of the oil filter housing is defined. All characteristics must be counted. It is important to remember the starting point. For the edge profile, the edges are counted. For the groove profile, the number is determined based on the indentations. The special groove profile has indentations that are counted.

3. In the last step, the outer diameter of the oil filter housing must be measured. A vernier calliper is suitable for this purpose and can be used to precisely measure small distances and lengths. With an edge profile with symmetrical graduation, measurements are taken from edge to edge. With asymmetrical graduation, measurements are taken from groove to edge. For groove profiles with symmetrical graduation, measurements are taken from profile gap to profile gap.

Which oil filter wrench is suitable for my vehicle?

Different vehicles require different oil filters. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, special oil filter wrenches are more suitable than others. The reason for this: Not all vehicles have the same oil filter. The size of the filters can vary. In some cars, access to the oil filter is also more difficult. Slimmer and more flexible oil filter wrenches are required there. There are filter housings made of metal or plastic. Metal housings require more robust spanners. Caution is advised with plastic housings. Some vehicle manufacturers specify a certain torque that must be adhered to when tightening the filter. There are oil filter wrenches with integrated torque functions to fulfil these requirements and ensure that the filter is neither too loose nor too tight. We make sure that your maintenance is safe, easier and more effective. We have the right spanner for every filter.

What exactly does torque-controlled tightening mean?

The oil filters and housings are tightened according to the manufacturer's exact specifications. Similar to tightening the wheels of a car to a specific torque. The recommended torque ensures that the seal between the filter and the engine is compressed just right, without excessive pressure that could cause damage. Specialised tools such as oil filter wrenches help to fit the oil filter with just the right amount of pressure so that it is neither too loose nor too tight.
